Melrose Manor

When I first walked into this retirement apartment at
Melrose Manor, Auria Senior Living in Melrose,  Johannesburg, it felt tired, dark and
uninspiring. The bones were there, but it lacked warmth, personality and the
sense of home my client was looking for. The goal of this renovation was
simple: to create a space that felt elegant, uplifting and full of life—a home
that she would genuinely love spending time in.

As an interior designer I believe that good design
has the power to change not only how a home looks, but how it feels. Every
decision throughout this retirement apartment renovation was made to
bring light, colour and joy back into the space.

The renovation began with new flooring throughout the
apartment, creating a fresh foundation for the design. We introduced decorative
wall mouldings to add architectural character and a timeless French influence,
while a dramatic oversized artwork in the entrance sets the tone from the
moment you walk through the front door.

The interiors were layered with soft pastel tones, rich
textures and a collection of bespoke furniture and custom-designed pieces made
specifically for the apartment. Subtle touches of Indochine-inspired design add
depth and character, bringing together classic French elegance with a relaxed,
collected feel that feels both sophisticated and incredibly liveable.

One of my favourite parts of the project is how effortlessly
the spaces flow together. Every room feels calm and inviting, yet there is an
energy throughout the apartment that simply didn't exist before. It is bright
without being stark, elegant without feeling formal, and colourful without
overwhelming the senses.

This project is a wonderful example of how thoughtful renovation
design can completely transform the experience of a home. Whether I'm
